US Senate Increases Visa Fees For Indian IT Majors

Neha Sood, Sunday 08th August 2010

In a decision which may affect Indian IT firms adversely the US senate has passed a bill which increases the cost of visa applications from Indian IT companies like Infosys by around $2000 to $2250. The decision to increase visa fees is justified as a mean to fund the expenses incurred in protecting the porous border between US and Mexico. The hike in visa fees though is only applicable to companies in US who employ less 50 percent American in their organization.

During the senate session on the border security bill, US senator Charles Schumer specifically cited companies like Infosys which outsource high paying US jobs to low paid immigrant workers. The decision by the US senate is expected to increase the costs of large Indian IT companies and NASSCOM president Som Mittal has already issued a statement mentioning that the bill would have \"negative consequences for both U.S. and Indian companies\"

Indian IT companies typically employ Indian workers on H -1B visas in US, however these workers are also a great source for revenue for the US government in form social security taxes they pay apart from being a major contributor in making the US IT industry technologically competitive.
