Goverment Sanctions Significant Funds For Second Phase of UID

The ambitious Unique Identification card (UID) project is all set to move forward to the next stage as the government had allotted a fund of Rs. 3023.1 crore to the Unique Identification Authority of India(UIDAI) for its second phase.


The tamper proof biometric identity will aim to cover the entire Indian populace of near about 1.17 billion people. The Unique Identification card will help in better governance as the card will ensure a better working of government schemes and programs such as NREGA and will also keep a track of the illegal immigration into India.


The phase one of the Unique Identification card intends to build an apt infrastructure which will facilitate testing of the UIDAI’s pilot projects and will also help in setting up of headquarters in Delhi and other regional offices. By the end of phase one which will start by August this year will aim to distribute nearly 100 million unique Identification cards. By the year 2014 it aims at providing 600 million Unique Identification numbers to the citizens of India. These distributions will be done with help of various government agencies, banks, insurance companies and other marketing firms. The 12 number Unique Identification number is named as Aadhar.
