In an attempt to better the internet services provided to subscribers, Trai (Telecom regulatory authority of India) has asked for comments from the service providers, pertaining to the quality of service.
A consultation paper released on the subject stated that there was a requirement for identification of QoS measures. These easy-to-monitor and enforce measures would help in ensuring that a minimum bandwidth is available with the service providers to be offered to users. With a recent rise in the number of subscribers and services like peer-to-peer file sharing and IPTV (these require greater bandwidth), improvement in the present broadband connections is a must.
In this regard, a set of guidelines named ‘Quality of Service of Broadband Service Regulations’ was issued by the authority in 2006. This had the parameters like packet loss, peak bandwidth utilization and latency in network. By following these, one can estimate the extent to which the network is crowded. Consequently, the service providers can correct it before QoS gets affected.
