India - top among countries inducing anti-dumping measures

India has been working strongly to stop dumping of products in the country. This practice, if left unchecked can have a serious dampening effect on a country’s industrial growth. In this process, a manufacturer starts selling his products across boundary, at a price which is either below the selling price (being charged by the sellers in the home country) or the cost of production (which the producers are incurring).

In a study to gauge the steps taken by various countries in the direction of curbing this harmful practice was carried out. India emerged as the top slot occupant in the list. This can be attributed to the number of such measures adopted, which stand at 16 in absolute terms. When the situation of first-half of the current year was compared with that of previous year, an increase of 78% was discovered. European Union was left behind as it worked with half the measures, i.e.8 in number.

In case of India, Indonesia, EU, South Africa and Korea, the instances of such duties being levied have shown an increase. However, the word of caution is not to go very far in imposing such duties and measures as these can pose problems in trading across boundaries.
